What Will Your Child Learn in Kindergarten?
During your child’s Kindergarten year at First Steps CDC they will grow and develop in a safe, caring environment that is individualized to help your child build strong social, emotional and academic skills and set them on a path to love learning!
The Kindergarten Curriculum is based upon the
California Core Standards but also embraces our
emergent curriculum. Children will direct their own
learning within each subject area and will be
stimulated through individualized problems and
activities that will help them develop at their own
pace. Below is a summary of the curriculum areas and
goals for your child’s Kindergarten year.
Language & Literacy
- Introduction to high frequency words found in reading
- Compiling a dictionary of “Important Words.”
- Recognizing, blending, and substituting consonants and vowel sounds.
- Learning features of a story, reporting main idea and problem/solution.
- Writing, illustrating, and publishing books.
- Practice print and proper grammar and punctuation.
Mathematics
- Recognize, write and count numbers to 100
- Learn place value using manipulative and one-to-one correspondence.
- Read and follow number sentences, add, subtract, and word problems.
- Learn time, sequencing, calendar.
- Identify and become familiar with money utilizing, pennies, dimes, dollars, tens, and hundreds.
Social Studies
- Learn to be part of the classroom community and community at large, plan and implement community project.
- Learn about our own culture and the diversity of other cultures
- Learn about historical people and events and relate to current life
- Learn about, research, and care for the environment.
Physical Education
- Gain coordination and agility through strength activities and group sports.
The Arts(Music, Drama, Art)
- Art Appreciation and introduced to creating art through different mediums, attend bi-weekly art class
- Music Appreciation and opportunities for movement and singing, attend weekly music enrichment class.
- Learn theater terminology and put on several plays, attend bi-weekly drama class
Science
- Identify stages of the scientific method and conduct experiments.
- Learn to observe, examine and record findings on charts and graphs
- Research and report on physical and life sciences.
- Explore chemistry and physics through hands-on lessons
Spanish
- Introduction and practice using simple greetings and vocabulary
- Reinforce Spanish through music, games, art and stories
- Attend weekly Spanish Lessons through Lango Adventure Learning.
Social and Emotional Skills
- Learn skills to work independently and in groups
- Share ideas and materials and learn to respect other’s.
- Opportunities to lead the class through activities and presentations, building self-confidence.
